2 packages active dry yeast (4 1/2 teaspoons)
1/2 cup warm water (110-115°F)
3/4 cup warm milk (110-115°F)
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup shortening
1 egg
1 teaspoon salt
3 1/2-4 cups flour
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
8 ounces tomato sauce
8 slices American cheese, quartered
Dissolve yeast in water. Add milk, sugar, shortening, egg, salt and 2 cups flour. Beat till smooth. Stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Turn onto floured surface and knead till smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl, turning to coat top. Cover and let rise in warm place 30 minutes till doubled. Brown beef and onion together till no longer pink. Drain. Stir in tomato sauce. Remove from heat. Punch dough down. Divide into 16 pieces. On lightly floured surface, gently roll and stretch each piece into 5 inch circle. Top each circle with 2 pieces of cheese and 3 tablespoons of beef mixture. Bring dough over filling to center and pinch in center to seal. Grease baking sheet. Place buns seam side down on prepared baking sheet. Cover and let rise in warm place 20 minutes till doubled. Heat oven to 400°F. Bake 8-12 minutes till golden brown. Serve warm.
