Fried Bannocks

4 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 cup melted, cooled shortening
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups cold water
honey

Mix dry ingredients thoroughly. Form a well in the dry ingredients. Pour in melted shortening then add water. Mix till blended. Knead and work the dough on a floured board with floured hands till it holds together. Pinch off fist-sized lumps and shape into disks. Form a hollow in the center with your thumb and place into 350°F hot oil and cook like doughnuts for about 5 minutes, turning once. Remove when bannock has browned and risen to the top of the oil. Drain on paper towels. Drizzle with honey and serve warm.
